Ok! Time to update my blog!
The first half of 2007 has past... now shall list my thoughts in point form:-
1. Time to meet up with lots of ppl - Glad that currently it is during the two-day, two-day shift system so can meet up with lots of ppl, regardless whether they just came back from aust/uk/us, going there as first year students or simply taken a break after their first year in local uni... Met up the 7b peeps during the sentosa outing (ultimate frisbee is fun!)... Naogui outing coming soon and 4A03 should seriously organise one outing liaoz...
2. My dedication to JSP/PHP/MySQL scripts finally broke down when I realised I do not have any access rights to the database... so shall work with the higher authorities to settle the issue... meanwhile i will just use a very simple javascript website to explain the workings behind my idea... Nice to learn so much stuff within such a short timeframe though... and I'm prepared to slowly acclimatise back to the pressure(certainly felt it these days)! Sianz...
3. Time to really start cracking for uni apps... for ppl who are concerned with what uni i'm entering, I dun have the answer right now... and hopefully I'll get what I want!
4. Back to my old interests of weiqi and bowling! Just went bowling with shouheng at victors (perhaps our last game there coz it is closing down... the HC bowling memories will always stay in our minds...) and didn't really have the mood to play until I seriously thought I'm throwing money down the drain... haha... and the last two games were seriously fun though competitive... at least i got the hook feeling back! One day must bowl with yusin and the rest too! As for weiqi, had been reading up the books i bought at taiwan and certainly some are quite detailed for the opening moves... must practise one day and not just read liaos...maybe can just crash hc recreational weiqi and have some fun games with the duan4 wei4 peeps...
5.
Live Earth concert - shall have a brief critique abt it... viewing from a bigger picture, we can conclude that the concert has not truly realised its aim of increasing public awareness amongst the public...
A simple look at the cities which the Live Earth concerts were held shows that they are organised mostly within developed regions... i am not saying china is developed as a country, but certainly shanghai is a developed city... Awareness and implementation within these urbanised areas can be created to a much better effect through governmental measures and I believed that it is not the first day that these countries have started their environmental campaigns... While u may disagree and point out that such events do create awareness since it is broadcast worldwide, and ppl were obliged to sign some 'pact' before watching the shows live, it is hard to get ppl agree thru the signing and those might just probably be interested in the stars involved...
I almost laughed in fact when watching the musicians performing in front of the penguins i guess at the antarctica... although it is of a certain symbolic meaning (7 continents), i guess it just contributes to the notion of what Greenpeace is doing... tying themselves to trees to symbolise the "Don't cut trees" gesture... and the end result: showing the world that environmental protection is just a "wayang" act (in my friends' term) or a show-putting act and undermines the true meaning behind these organisations...
Meanwhile, the manner in which the messages are being placed across the public is the usual "do this and how many trees saved" or "one person produces how much waste each day" statistical notion that puts ppl off without realising how it truly relates to them... sadly also, they could have made use of this great opportunity to spread more of the envt-protection messages within the concert itself...
Lastly, it just serves to show that in the end, lots of rubbish created and electricity wasted which contributes to the global warming... and perhaps the only gain from this concert is the raise of profile for the participating artistes and perhaps the Live Earth organisation, and the enjoyment of the audience?
Hopefully this could be used as a springboard for more of the awareness thingy to go into GOVTs and INDUSTRIES which are the real main contributors... Meanwhile, start saving electricity and use recycled stuff! As I've said, it is always now better than never (though it is only recently that some major countries decided to ratify the Kyoto Protocol which cuts down on CO2 emissions) and do not wait until it bites us!
